A Glossy Ibis was found at RSPB Saltholme today. The bird was showing well from the Phil Stead Hide.

Sunrise in Stockton-on-Tees

What a beautiful sky over home this morning at approximately 6.30 am.






Oh Deer at the Teesmouth Field Centre

After the Bird Identification Workshop at the Teesmouth Field Centre a Roe Deer was spotted across the stell. This is a new mammals to add to the species seen of Hartlepool Power Station land.

On Sunday 24th July, I had an afternoon walk at Coatham Wood near Long Newton. The warm afternoon sunshine was also enjoyed by the Butterflies, Moths and Dragonflies. The follwing species were recorded:
Butterflies: 12 Meadow Brown, 16 Large Skipper, 10 Large White, 8 Small Skipper, 1 Small White, 16 Small Tortoiseshell, 11 Small Heath, 1 Green-veined Butterfly and 1 Comma.
Moths: 1 Yellowshell Moth, 2 Shaded Board-bar and 1 Udea Lutealis.
Dragonfly: 1 Brown Hawker.
Mammals: Rabbit & Stoat.

Iron Prominent

This is my third new prominent this year!

Moth Update

I put the moth trap out on Friday 1st July and it was warm dry night with the minimum temperature of 13.2C. 45 species recorded of 134 individuals, so it was the best night of the year so far.
Highlights included my first record of Iron Prominent (2000) and Engrailed (1947). There were also new records for the year:

Highlights from Friday 24th June 2011.
21 species trapped and the minimum temperature recorded overnight was 11.0C. The highlights included another Swallow Prominent (2007) and the first records of the year for the following species.

A pair of Blackbirds have been prospecting in the garden this week. I think this is their second brood this year having previously reared one chick from a nest in a nearby garden.

The Drinker Moth

I was so pleased to find a Drinker Moth in my trap on Friday.

I put the trap out on Friday night for the Garden Moth Scheme and despite the threat of rain the temperature only dropped to 12.2C. Thirty-two species were recorded with four new species for the garden.

RSPB Saltholme Visit

I went to RSPB Saltholme on Monday 20th June and had a great day. As I left the car park and walked to the visitors' centre I noticed a 6-spotted Burnet Moth feeding on the thistles.



Thirty-five species were seen including Little Gull (1st summer), Sandwich Tern and Sand Martin which I needed for my year list.

It is good to see the birds returning to our garden in numbers. Sadly we didn't have any birds breeding in our garden. However, adults have continued to visit the feeders for an easy meal whilst looking for live food for young birds.
